Night Currency vs Proficiency

Night currency and night proficiency overlap, but they are not interchangeable. One is a regulatory recent-experience question; the other concerns practical familiarity with the night operations you intend to conduct.

Start with the legal requirement

For passenger carrying, verify the current §61.57 requirement and applicable definitions. Do not substitute a personal practice tracker for the regulatory record.

Then review the operation

Consider airport lighting, terrain, weather, crosswind, navigation, visual illusions, emergency options and how recently you have operated in comparable conditions.

Practice can be skill-specific

Night landings may be recent while night navigation or emergency procedures are not. Treating proficiency as a set of skills makes those differences visible.

Use instruction when appropriate

A flight instructor can help structure refresher training, evaluate performance and rebuild confidence after a long break or limited night experience.

Track the skills you actually practice. Last Practiced helps pilots record when they practiced individual flying skills and set personal Practice Targets for skills they want to revisit. Learn about Last Practiced.

Practice Targets are personal reminders. They do not establish regulatory currency, proficiency, legal eligibility to fly, or compliance with a specific operating requirement.

Authoritative references

Night adds operational context

Runway lighting, terrain, visual illusions, weather, reduced external references and unfamiliar airports can change workload at night. A legal recent-experience check does not individually evaluate those conditions.

Choose night practice deliberately

Consider which night tasks you actually use and which have been absent from recent flying. Instructor-supported practice can be valuable when conditions or skills are unfamiliar.
